Growing Methods
After working on an organic farm for two years, Charlie learned a great deal about Organic practices from soil improvement to weed control. We are proud to say we grow without the use of synthetic pesticides. We only use Organically approved insecticides and fungicides which are derived from a natural source--such as a plant or fungus.
We also do not use treated seeds. Many seeds are coated with a fungicide & insecticide such as thiram or captan (pink/green/blue colors). We order untreated seeds as well as organic seeds. We do not use any GMO (genetically modified) seed. Most of our plant varieties are hybrids with a few heirlooms mixed in.
We amend our soil with Organic Chicken Manure as well as Feathermeal and no longer rely on Synthetic Fertilizer!
Finally, cultivation is our main weed control. We use tools such as our wheel hoe, stirrup hoes, and even a shallow till with our rototiller to manage weeds in the fields. Sometimes, depending on the crop, our hands do the job best! A weedy garden can be an ugly sight. We do our best to keep the fields clean (especially since you can see all of them from the highway!).
